Religious Harm & Spiritual Abuse

The clients I see have a rather unique life experience and work with me to process, cope with, and recover from religious harm. There is significant nuance in understanding the complexities and idiosyncrasies of a particular sub-culture. Together we seek to understand the effects of high-control religion, as well as receive support and guidance through the processes of faith deconstruction and/or redefinition.

Often while navigating past experiences with high-control religion, and the challenges found living within rigid religious structures; clients find themselves at the intersection of relational issues, PTSD symptoms, trauma, anxiety, depression, estrangement, existential fear, philosophical struggles and intense confusion and grief.

What I provide as a therapist is a space where your unique experience can be understood through a sympathetic trauma-informed lens.  Therapy is a collaborative process and my goal throughout our time together is to be a positive and stabilizing presence throughout the process of healing and growth.

Special Focus:

EMDR

Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a psychotherapeutic treatment model that has excelled in treating trauma by addressing the mind-body connection and reprocessing the destructive ways trauma can be stored in the body.  While it was initially developed to treat clients with severe trauma and PTSD, EMDR has expanded to include and address attachment wounds, anxiety, panic, depression, and other issues that affect daily functioning, relationships, and general life fulfillment. The work of processing trauma can be difficult- living with untreated trauma and its effects is exponentially harder.  If you are interested in learning more about this particular treatment, please visit EMDRIA.com for additional information, or call for a free phone consult.

Estranged Adult Children

I work with clients to support them through the incredibly difficult decision to enforce stronger boundaries within dysfunctional family dynamics.

Estrangement is not a choice any person makes lightly. It most often comes after years of abuse, significant harm, childhood trauma, and repeated patterns of dysfunctional relationships with emotionally immature parents and families. My goal is to support my clients in whatever relational closeness or distance is necessary for their health and well-being. I do not believe or support that estrangement or cut-off is the only option to managing relationships within difficult or dysfunctional family dynamics, but I do know that is some cases it is necessary.
